IN THIS ISSUE 2 A Note from the Director 3 Library News 4-5 West River 6-7 Central 8 Keystone 9 South 10 In Your Community 11 Library Friends 12 Special Services www. e lyr i al i brary. org Dear Friends Jennifer Starkey UPCOMING CLOSINGS Labor Day Monday, September 5 Staff Development Day Monday, October 10 Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 24 (EPLS closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23) Christmas Eve Saturday, December 24 Christmas Day (observed) Monday, December 26 New Year ’s Day (observed) Monday, January 2, 2023 2 First, I want to say a huge thank-you for the feedback we received in the library’s community survey over the summer! Your input is greatly appreciated and helps EPLS evaluate our offerings and plan for the future. Fall is here and that means back to school, cider and donuts, the leaves changing, and sweater weather. We welcome you to spend time this Fall at your libraries in LaGrange and Elyria; browse the new books, talk with our helpful staff, and attend programs and events. Our aim is that there is something for everyone in our Fall newsletter, from entertaining to informative, educational to family fun! I invite you to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the new Central Library on October 3! The event will begin with a Meet and Greet with me, your new(ish) Library Director, to chat and mingle over refreshments. Then we will commemorate the occasion by burying a time capsule! We are pleased to have Marci Rich, author of Looking Back at Elyria: A Midwest City at Midcentury giving a talk on the history of Elyria immediately after. Programs featuring animals have been very well-loved so we are bringing more to you! Barnyard Buddies live animal petting zoo is coming to the Central Library in September. We are also excited to have Jungle Terry visiting our Keystone location with an array of live animals families can learn about up close. Cats in the Stacks is coming back again in October. We are excited to host programs at EPLS @ LCCC with our partners at Lorain County Community College, including Elephant Appreciation Day (but sorry, you’ll have to go to the zoo to see a live elephant!) For book lovers, the annual Cascade of Authors event is in its 12th year and features eight local authors at our West River location. As always we host book discussion groups for adults including a non-fiction group, a group for adults who love graphic novels, the Page Turners popular fiction club, and Shelf Awareness book club that will delve into dangerous ideas and discuss books that have been subject to book bans. And for people who like to buy books, Friends of Elyria Public Library and Friends of EPLS Keystone will each host a big used book sale event this Fall. There is a lot to look forward to this Fall! See you at the library!
