The next chapter Summer 2022 Elyria Public Library System Newsletter

IN THIS ISSUE 2 A Note from the Director 3 Library News 4-5 West River 6-7 Central 8 Keystone 9 South 10 In Your Community 11 Library Friends 12 Special Services www. e lyr i al i brary. org Dear Friends Jennifer Starkey UPCOMING CLOSINGS Memorial Day Monday, May 30 Independence Day Monday, July 4 2 We are pleased to bring you the Summer 2022 issue of The Next Chapter. It wouldn’t be summer without the EPLS Summer Reading Program, which runs from May 31 to July 31. This year’s theme “Oceans of Possibility” inspires curiosity, wonder, and fun! Summer reading was originally created for children to expand their minds in the summer months, and we now also offer a program for adults, to excite all community members to read more. And don’t forget that we no longer charge late fines for our overdue items! Every branch will be offering prizes and drawings for all ages and an incredibly wide range of events and programs to “float your boat” -- pun intended! To give you a taste of what’s in store this summer, we are looking forward to having the Whalemobile at the Central Library, a 43-foot-long life size model of a humpback whale that you can walk inside of! Keystone branch will host a series called “Gardening Do’s” in partnership with the OSU Extension to improve home garden harvests. Our Outreach team will lead “Books and Bikes” on the 2nd Saturdays of the month for a group bike ride and book chat. Come out to our South branch for a Magic Show for the whole family and pick a sample of what’s growing in the community garden. If you are traveling this summer or want a new way to keep up with your reading list, I highly recommend two digital resources we offer that have an amazing selection of digital audiobooks, ebooks, and more: Libby and Hoopla. I especially enjoyed using the Libby app on my phone recently to listen to Adam Grant’s Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know and Oprah Winfrey’s What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing, cowritten with Bruce D. Perry. Learn more at our website, call us, or stop by and we will be very happy to help you get started using these resources! I want to take a moment to thank a special library supporter, Gerald Crum, who has retired from his service on the Elyria Public Library System Board of Trustees. He has been incredibly generous with his knowledge, talents, and his time over the many years he served. He was instrumental in the building projects that will serve LaGrange and Elyria for decades to come. EPLS thanks him for his kindness and service to the library. Have a wonderful summer and see you at the library!

3 INTRODUCING: THE EPLS MOBILE TECH VEHICLE The Elyria Public Library System was recently awarded $100,000 of grant funding by The State Library of Ohio’s Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program to support workforce development outside of the library’s doors. The Mobile Elyria Work & Outreach Center (EWOC) will increase the availability of electronic resources and staff assistance among geographic areas of low income and high unemployment. The Mobile EWOC will be located in an outfitted vehicle designed for travel and one-on-one educational workforce assistance. The Mobile EWOC aims to visit various locations and will contain up to four work stations with laptops, a printer with scanning capabilities, WIFI hotspots, and reference materials that patrons may need to work on resumes, applications, and other necessary paperwork. The Mobile EWOC aims to bring workforce development to you and offer assistance that is needed based on the types of questions that are asked of the library already. We are looking at reaching more than our patrons that walk through the library’s doors. Other organizations supported the Elyria Public Library System during the grant proposal process, including Horizon Education Centers, Lorain County Urban League, Lorain County Workforce Development Agency, and Our F.A.M.I.L.Y. With the support of these agencies, we believe the Mobile EWOC will have significant impact of workforce development in our county. Starting June 1 24/7 Access to Films That Entertain, Educate, and Inspire Kanopy offers more than 30,000 films, including critically acclaimed movies, inspiring documentaries, award-winning foreign films and more. There’s something for everyone, including: • Critically acclaimed films from A24, Magnolia, NEON, Kino Lorber, and more • Popular TV series like Staged, The Librarians, The Returned, The Chosen, Bad Banks, and Prisoner • Classics from Criterion and other key suppliers • Kanopy Kids, a curated educational and entertainment collection just for children, complete with parental controls • Lifelong learning with PBS • A rich international selection representing cinema from around the world • Movies in non-English languages • Thousands of films that support your Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives (DEI) Kanopy displays in the Extras section of the Libby app alongside the library’s curated lists, catalog guides, and other streaming media services. After selecting Kanopy in Libby, you will be directed to the Kanopy platform to learn more and get started. You can enjoy Kanopy on all your favorite devices from desktop computers to mobile devices and smart TVs, including Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Fire TV, and more! COMMUNITY GARDEN: COMING SOON TO WEST RIVER The Elyria Public Library System was recently awarded $10,426 of Healthy Places Grant funding by Lorain County Public Health to install library gardens. The raised-bed gardens will equip our patrons with gardening knowledge and experience in an effort toward self-sufficiency. The gardens will be located at the West River branch as separate raised-bed gardens with various plants. The library garden aims to be an initial point for the community to gain a greater understanding of where food comes from and how to grow food as educational programs are established for our patrons. Beyond programming, the garden will be a public green space that our community can enjoy. “Our goal as a library is to empower our patrons; to help them become more capable and independent,” said Librarian and grant applicant Katlyn Stucke. “One way to do this is to educate people on nutrition and teach children where food comes from. Growing for oneself is a form of independence and empowerment.”
